C as "portable code" is largely an illusion for small embedded.

This, of course in not true for "mathematical excersizes" but for cases where things like byte ordering is interesting a "port" of the code will ususally not be helped by a ton of #ifedfs since the I/O structure of the other processor will be totally diferent.
