Running off a battery, I will almost state that a switcher is mandatory since you will, from a 12V battery, see anything between 7V and 14V4.

The badmouthing of switchers all originate from people that built their own switchers without having the 10 year expertise in switcher layout required to make a quality switcher. If you buy an industrial module from a reputed switcher manufacturer, such as power-trends, you will have no problem filtering the output to "linear quality" or better.
