#169449 - alternatives

I'd rather not go adding components to the board as it's already crowded, and I'm limited to the size as I'm using the freeware version of Eagle to design it. Also cost is an issue: I can buy some things here in Kansas City, but the electronics store I know of doesn't have a good selection of microcontroller-related supplies (I went in asking for a 11.0592MHz crystal and got blank stares all around), and if I order online, they want $10 to ship a $0.30 part. I'm kinda stuck with either an 89S51 or 89s52 because my programmer will only program those chips (or the ones with C instead of S)

I realize that you're limited to what you can get on hand, and I don't think you mentioned whether you rolled your own board or are using an eval/starter kit, but consider replacing the 89S5x parts with a Silicon Labs 8051 variant. Don't worry about the programmer as the SiLabs debug/programming JTAG dongle costs $40 (a SCREEEEEAMING deal). And the SiLabs parts have enough on-board flash for you do store whatever static parameters you might need. Some flavors of the SiLabs parts have on-board oscillators that are accurate enough to use as a MIDI time-base.

Yes, I'm a fan of the SiLabs parts ...
