What happens is that the mechanical engineer squeezes the battery, sensor, LCD display, sounder and push buttons into the smallest possible case, and then says "I've left you 1.2 square cm of PCB area for the electronics. That's OK isn't it, because we've just spent $50,000 on tooling for the case". So I've got to fit a regulator, amplifier, bias network and micro into 1.2 square cm.
