Based on the evidence available, I think that is your problem: viz, it is an inherently poor design, and it can only ever work intermittently - which does appear to be exactly what you are seeing!
That's how debugging works: you examine the evidence, then form a theory based on that evidence. You must now do some further tests to see if the theory holds or not; if it doesn't, you need to report the results as further evidence so that the theory can be revised.
