I've seen a PC USB connection crash plenty of times when doing ESD testing! Because we didn't want to fry a PC motherboard, we also performed ESD tests with a hub between our device and the PC, but that didn't seem to make much difference. You can try adding a transient voltage suppressor like the SP0503BAHT, which is designed specifically for USB signal.
