A junk box programmer might work - but, again, if it doesn't how will a novice with no uC experience debug it when it doesn't?

You need not purchase a programmer.

But I think you would be far better advised to buy one.
There are plenty on ebay.

you are forced to waste money for a full fledged parallel port High voltage programmer.

USB and RS232-connected programmers are widely available - you are not forced to use a parallel port.

I would consider this an Investment rather than a "waste" of money.
