At present the MCU is programmed to start at 50hz.For soft start I will reduce it to 10hz or 12Hz or decrease the duty cycle of Pulse width. For simple and low cost solution you have to connect digital GND to -ve rail unless you have an isolated gate drive for the MOSFET which takes power from rails. see the motor control section of the microchip web site, they have ap notes for all motor types and you can download schematics for their inverter and learn from it.
