A number of compiler vendors kind of do assure you that this is ok, by supplying you with a number of intrinsic assembler functions - often preprocessor declarations that results in inlined assembler instructions for turning on/off interrupts, computing sqrt() using direct floating-point processor instruction instead of using the CRTL function (which has a call cost and also spends time verifying the input parameter), ...
