I remember in the early 90s when scopes were really expensive or when we couldn't afford one I built LED version of component tester using 2 LM3914s in dot mode and made them drive 10x10 LED matrix. one LM3914 for X-Axis and the other for Y axis. To my surprise it was perfect, battery operated and portable. I built one for myself and sold another one which made mine free. It was so much fun.
