I taught myself Java a few years ago when it looked like being the next big thing and I'm not really sure what's happened to it. I suspect that it's gone from hype to workhorsem, so there's actually more Java running but less talk about it. It seems to be used in a lot of diverse applications. On the other hand .NET is pretty Microsoft-Windows centric, and Windows isn't setting the world on fire anymore. You can't discount the momentum behind it and the installed base of applications will keep .NET programmers in work for a while, but it's hard to imagine a new generation of graduates getting excited about it.

"Follow your Passion" works for me.
