I'm considering designing an 'adaptive' PID controller, by which I mean a circuit that monitors the performance of the control loop and adjusts the PID terms accordingly. Has anyone done anything like that and got any tips?

In particular, I'm scratching my head trying to decide what variables give me the most robust indication that the system is either overdamped or underdamped.
