I was thinking of "Asymetric Multicore" - ie, a big core (eg, ARM) with a small core (eg, 8051) - so you could do low-level bit-banging on the small core, and the heavy lifting on the the big one.

You can adopt the same strategy with the two "cores" in separate packages - Multi-Processor

Or use some sort of PLD...
