Not having previously heard of "Charlieplexing", I was about to suggest using LEDs paired in "anti-parallel" with a "bridge" drive.
Having just looked it up, I now see that "Charlieplexing" is all about using LEDs paired in "anti-parallel" with a "bridge" drive! Basic arrangement, with 2 LEDs and 2 push-pull pins: 
Extending this with an extra tri-state pin:

I noticed Charlieplexing in my travels across google, but it seemed more appropriate to situations with multiple LEDs lit, as opposed to one of many lit. It seems to me that it's much easier to use in the case where only 1 LED is ever lit at any one time! |
