In your code, you may read the location you want (I did not check the actual code in R1 against the datasheet now), but don't output the read value anywhere.
Also, you can write only to FLASH bytes previously erased. You cannot simply rewrite a byte. You also surely have some code jumping from the reset vector, 0000h, to your "good" routine, don't you. --- I at this moment don't have access to real hardware; I will try to concoct some working basic code on Monday, please remind me if I won't post until Tuesday.
