No - even quite "small" embedded systems are getting "connected" these days!

It is perfectly feasible - and not (always) unreasonable - to implement a simple IP stack in even quite a modest 8051; there are also, as you know, add-on units that allow IP connectivity without a stack on the embedded processor.

Of course, words like "large", "small", "modest", etc are all very subjective...
