You devise a scheme to detect when the cable is plugged in and cause that to shut off the termination electronically. That can take various forms including a loop-back pin in the cable, a interlock switch, a cable signal bias detection, or even a physical pin insertion detection scheme. (many DMMs use this scheme with their split banana jack that allows wrong connection setup detection when in wrong meter mode).
