Yes - if you want to avoid MS then, surely, some form of Linux must be the obvious choice for technical work?

I mean, just look at how many so-called "Windows" tools actually rely on linuxy-stuff underneath - with all that Cygwin and whatnot...!

GCC being a prome example, of course...
