Because of all my limitations I might just change to a stepper motor.
you can equally well have noise problems with a stepper motor.
However GET RID OF THE POTENTIOMETER (or buy a $100 one). An encoder (Russ suggested one) or, if you only have a few fixed stop points, a few hall-effect sensors will give you a good read.
