Buried inside the user's guide for the new Xilinx Spartan 3AN starter kit board is a section about its on-board 2x16 LCD. It has probably the best description of how these silly things work that I've seen.

So if you haven't sorted these things out, perhaps this will help. No 8051 code, of course. (but you could do it in a PicoBlaze.)
