Each time DIGILENT comes out with a new board, there are little "problems." With the very early XC2 board they had a nice wire-wrap area, but no way to connect to the signal connectors from the wiring side. With the Digilab2 board series, they made absolutely worst-case connections on their board by connecting the FPGA to connectors on opposing sides of the board. Further, their wire-wrap accessory board had the connectors' silk screen labels backward and, sadly, they used those unuseable connectors again. Fortunately they provided a set of holes for an additional connector on the board so that one could actually use the wire-wrap board for wire-wrap.
Now with their new, and nominally very nice FX2-BB board, they have a nice ground plane albeit on both sides, where it does little to help with supply bypass, since one has to wire supply connections. Additionally, they ship the board with those sockets intended to be used with those silly solderless breadboards, thereby eliminating all possiblity of connecting to the connectors they provide, as the sockets have no path to the wiring side of the board. As has been the case with every one of their boards that I've examined closely, it's "close, but no cigar." If only they'd leave out the parts that make their products unuseable ... |
