Lasers are divided into IV classes, by wattage. I don't remember what the delineations are, but as I recall a class I laser is low enough in power that even if your eye is inadvertantly exposed to the beam, your blink response should be quick enough to prevent retinal damage. This is not true with higher class lasers.
