Have a look at the Temic/Atmel RD2's.
They have a whole spare block called XAF, for which the status byte & co is really just a marginal use. Jan Waclawek PS. A guess: the programming/erasing circuitry might require to have a full byte/block present and it is not worth masking it out in hardware for reading... |
