#127809 - completely off topic but yey silver distance |
Ive just got my certificate for my gliding silver distance which I did in the summer this year, which is basically you have to fly for 50 Km and land back at your starting point and take photos to prove that you passed over various turning points. So anyway heres a couple of photos I thought people might like taken at camphill flying club which is near to Great Hucklow in the peak district. The first one is as you can see from the instruments at about 2900 feet doing 55 knots in a very strong thermal giving over ten knots vertical lift. The vertical speed indicator has an audio output as well so you know when you have fallen out of the thermal.
The seond one is flying in France in the spring flying round in a thermal with about ten other gliders above me. I did think about fitting thermistors into the wingtips to help early detection of thermals but the time delay due to the thermistors thermal inertia would probably be too long to be any practacal use and messing with the wings on your glider is a seriously bad idea. |
