#115963 - Surge current
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Bruce,

Most tantalums do not readily tolerate high surge currents, like you get when you suddenly apply voltage to the input, and catastrophic failures are certainly not uncommon.

There are some manufacturers that make surge-tested tantalums, but these tend to be on the expensive side.

I would suggest looking into high-cap ceramics. These are really marvelous, especially compared to tants! They are non-polarised, have a much greater tolerance for overvoltage and an extremely low ESR, which is great for noise filtering. Cheap as chips too.

Regards,
Rob.
