The ability to "write a virus" assumes that its possible to gain the relevant access to the system. The inherent security model of Unix precludes the simple, system wide access that Windows systems historically provided "for convenience" - like installing software.

In the example Jeff gave.

cd /
rm -rf


In my linux, the command options -r won't even exist unless you have root user access.
