#114350 - Well, I said I'd considered a DAC
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Yes, I did mention I was considering using a DAC, but ...
I didn't say I'd decided I wanted to use one as the exclusive control or primary control, though. What I like is the big knob, but sometimes it's desirable to drive the thing from an HPIB, ethernet, or USB port in order to achieve some relatively closely coupled interaction between different instruments, e.g. 'scope, logic analyzer, programmable supply, signal generator, etc. Commercially avaiable PSU's typically top out at 200-300 mA, and, while that's adequate for about 90% of cases, I want to be able to attack the other 10% as well without building/buying/accomodating more hardware. 2.5-4 Amps will pass the 99% mark, and that's probably adequate.

My main goal, however, is to have the analog control, perhaps with a switch to move it to a digital means, either from HPIB or from some other dynamic remote control. I don't want a digitally based user interface, however, at the front panel. I really dislike test equipment with a menu-driven user interface. It always demands that I take my attention away from what I'm doing in order to operate it.
