I once (1986) had to put 513 single-chippers in a single 6-foot rack together with power supplies and a large patch panel as a test system running a script. It used MC68701 MCU's to run the scripts and one to tell 'em when to "do it." The purpose was to execute the same script in order to simulate 512 users attempting to access the same resources on a new computer system for the Pentagon. The system under test choked. The gov probably bought it anyway, but it did break. It couldn't even pass the same test with 32 users, at which point we gave up.
