#111713 - Wimp. Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Hi Jan,
Actually, a wimp is not so much effeminate as effete. I'm not certain of the etemology of the word, but I have a hypothesis as to its origin. The earliest usage of the word that I am aware of is from the early half of the 20th century. There was a fictional character, in the comic strip Popeye, names Wimpy. My hypothesis is that the name was a derivation of the word "whimper." This is an accurate description of the character's persona, as he was always offering to "... gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today." Thus, he was presented as a person unable to provide for himself, completely reliant on those around him for his sustenance. So today, a "wimp" is someone who is ineffectual, weak, lacking abilities that others take for granted. And though most who are effeminate are also effete, or wimpy, the two words mean two very different things. |
