The PC UART (16C450 - compatible) has problems in implementing the 9-bit mode. Not that it is impossible, but it's cumbersome.

In non-PC environment, if standalone (not integrated into mcu) UARTs are used, there are UARTs which not only support the 9-bit mode, but also have the feature of "enhanced" UARTS found in some '51 derivatives - they can "wake-up" upon reception of a particular byte ("address") plus the 9th bit set. I came across Philips' SCN2681 but there must be more of them. |
