Having no idea for what is it good for, only a vague answer can be given: you can try RS232-to-IrCOMM conversion, then convert RS232 to RS485. An easy way to get IrCOMM done quick and easy is to go to Microchip site and search for IrDA there, they have a ready solution for the whole protocol stack needed (MCP21xx).
