I don't know if it's more reliable with the rather crummy USB programmer... I did more testing using a laptop running XP. Programming works fine with the USB programmer - if you don't rock it, so it looses contact with the USB socket :) The laptop doesn't have a serial port, so I haven't tested the MAX232 circuit on this system.
