If you look back on 8052.com or maybe elsewhere, you will find a lot of complaints especially on the earlier revisions of the silicon. Atmel apparently struggled for months if not years with producing the '8253 on a new technology line/fab, attempting to remove the need for the caps, or both.
So, whatever symptoms you are experiencing, they may be constrained to the silicon revision you have. I am willing to perform a set of tests out of curiosity, but wonder what revision could I acquire today. JW PS. Did you try the 4-5MOhm loading resistor on XTAL1, suggested by the newest (3286N–MICRO–3/10) revision of the datasheet? |
