The connection is identical to the connection with any "normal" RS232 port!

That is the whole point of these adaptors: to the 89S52 (or whatever) they are indistinguishable from a "real" RS232 port. Similarly to the software at the PC end.

Note that FTDI make cables that interface direct to 5V and 3V3 logic levels - so no RS232 Transceiver (MAX232, etc) is required:

They are also available as plug-in modules - again, giving a logic-level connection not needing any RS232 transceiver:
