Yes, you could adopt that convention; but be aware that it is by no means a standard - many places use upper & lower case pretty much indiscriminately in this context.

Just look how hard it is for people to get 'k' (1000) and 'K' (1024) right; or 's' (seconds) and 'S' (siemens) - and they are well-established, formal standards!
