is an archaic practice stemming from the days of core memory where you had a usually reliable part (the processor) and a prone to fault part (the core memory). If the processor works it can test the memory. Today with everything integrated, any part may fail, and most liklely the device will not be able to run the self test if the self test is to show something wrong.
