What alternatives are there to using an 8255?

- The 8255 dates back to the late 70's and is rapidly becoming obsolete. There are ways of duplicating or enhancing the functionality of the 8255 using CPLDs or even off the shelf addressed latches for both input and output operations.
If the 8255 is on the same card as the processor, you should think carefully about using one of the 8052 derivatives with more I/O ports than the standard (also 1979 vintage!) 8052.
If you have "time" then the use of SPI or I2C bus provides a greatly enhanced IO path for many applications. Manufacturers such as Phillip, Linear Technology, Maxim and many others provide peripherals such as Real time clocks, ADC, DAC, Power I/O etc etc. in such interface types. And they are easy to use too!
