Are there any free assemblers or 'C' compilers for the 8052?

- Yes. SDCC is an open-source, free 'C' compiler for the 8052. A link to SDCC can be found on the links page.
Metalink has been made freeware by the Metalink Corporation and has become a de-facto standard in the 8052 community as an assembler.
Hi-Tech Software provides a freeware version of their compiler.
Another well-documented, free assembler is ASEM-51.
